Cathay Pacific investigating A330 emergency diversion

Cathay Pacific is investigating an engine issue that forced the crew of one of its Airbus A330s to make an emergency landing at Denpasar's Ngurah Rai International airport on 24 September.

In a statement the carrier elaborates that the aircraft was operating flight CX170 from Perth to Hong Kong when a "defect" occurred in engine number 2.

“The engine was shut down and emergency landing was declared. Fire services met the aircraft on arrival. The aircraft landed safely in Denpansar International Airport at 03:39 (local time) and taxied to [a] bay normally,” adds Cathay.

No injuries were reported among the 254 passengers and crew on-board the aircraft.

Australian media reports say eyewitnesses saw flames coming from an engine, and heard a loud bang, before the plane started to shake. Cathay states however that there was no fire onboard.

Cathay confirms that the aircraft involved is registered as B-LAG. Flightglobal's Ascend Fleets database shows that the aircraft was built in 2007, and is leased from AerCap.
